2005 COYOTES: Central Valley, who struggled last season to a 3-13 record, surpassed their 2004 win total in just their fifth game after winning four of their first five games. Since then the Coyotes (4-3) have dropped their last two and hope to get back on the winning track against San Diego (2-5) this weekend. Coyote head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr., who took over as head coach last mid-season, has helped the Coyotes become one of the league's highest scoring teams as they are averaging over 50 points per game. QB Juston Wood seems to be finding his rhythm as he has thrown 30 touchdowns and rushed for four more in his last five games. The second-year quarterback has already thrown for 1,857 yards on the year. Other returnees include WR/LB Wes Borba, WR/LB Marvin Brown, and WR/DB Lamonte Jones. The team has found "instant offense" with the acquisition WR/LB George Williams, as he has recorded 11 TD's in his last four games and is first on the team in receptions (37) and receiving yards (567). Central Valley has gotten a boost defensively with the additions of DS's, Marvin Owens and Joshua Robinson, who is the team's leading tackler with 35 and half. FB/LB Clint Merz, who recorded "Defensive Player of the Game" honors last week for the second time this year, is emerging as one the Coyote's best pass rusher as he has recorded 18 tackles in six games, recorded a sack and blocked a couple of kicks. On the front line, fourth-year veteran Oscar Grajeda and third-year star Ahmad Bhatti have provided experience. WR/DB DeRonn Finley, has contributed to the offense with 11 touchdowns on 35 catches for 412 yards. He has also returned a kick return for a score.
THE SERIES: This will be the eleventh time the inter-state rivals will meet and the fifth meeting since the franchise moved to Fresno. The Riptide have won six of the previous ten matchups, including a 40-27 playoff victory on August 3, 2003. Last season, the Riptide took the first three games convincingly but the Coyotes were able to record a victory in the season finale at San Diego, 48-30 on July 30, 2004. It was the franchise's third-ever win in San Diego and allowed the Coyotes to end the 2004 season with a two-game win streak.

COYOTE HEAD COACH: Fred Biletnikoff Jr. enters his third season in the arenafootball2 league and second with the Coyotes. Biletnikoff Jr. joined the Coyotes coaching staff last season as assistant head coach before becoming interim-head coach midway through the season. After five games as interim-head coach, Biletnikoff Jr. earned the title of head coach, winning his final two games of the season. He was also a part of the Fresno Frenzy coaching staff in 2002.
THIS WEEKS QUOTES:
Coyote head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. on last weeks 68-61 overtime loss to Amarillo: "That was a really tough one to take. Our offense played extremely well but our defense was unable to come up with a stop when we needed it. If we come up with just one stop on defense in the second half, we come away with the win."
Biletnikoff Jr. on the health of the team: "We have a lot of guys that are beat up right now. It is part of the game and every team has to deal with it. I think the injuries have really hurt us on the defensive side of the ball. The losses of guys like Mike Duncan and Dwayne Tauiliili have been big."
Biletnikoff Jr. on San Diego: "Even though they are a team that has struggled early, they still have a group of players with a lot of experience that could turn things around. Although they have had trouble putting points on the board, they still boast on of the best defenses in the league so it will be a challenge for our offense."

OLD STOMPING GROUNDS : The original Bakersfield Blitz franchise was purchased by current Coyotes Operator, the Tachi-Yokut Tribe, in 2004. The tribe then decided to relocate the franchise to Fresno, naming the team the Central Valley Coyotes.
THE "IF" SECTION
If the Coyotes defeat San Diego it would:
- be their seventh win in their last ten games
- be their second-consecutive win against the Riptide
- be their fourth win in six games at San Diego
- give the Coyotes a 4-1 record against divisional opponents this year
Coyote HistorySeason (head coach) Record

2003 Bakersfield (James Fuller) 8-7-1(playoffs 0-1)
2004 Central Valley(Cree Morris - Biletnikoff Jr.) 3-13
2005 C. Valley (Biletnikoff Jr.) 4-3
WEST HEADS EAST: With the departure of the Hawaiian Islanders, the Coyote's Western division took new shape. While Bakersfield, Central Valley and San Diego remain, the realigned division now features the Rio Grande Valley Dorados and the Tulsa Talons.
SLOW STARTERS: The Coyotes held the lead at halftime just twice last season, winning both games (vs. Rio Grande Valley 21-12 on May 15, 2004 and vs. San Diego 27-6 on July 30, 2004). The Coyotes were 1-13 when trailing at halftime in 2004. This season the Coyotes are 3-1 when leading at the break and 1-2 when trailing.
NOT SO SWEET HOME: Selland Arena has been particularly kind to visiting teams. Since the arena's first indoor football game, (Los Angeles Avengers vs. Houston ThunderBears on June 9, 2001) the home team holds a 8-12 record.
Selland Arena Home team Home record
2001 Houston ThunderBears 0-1
2003 Fresno Frenzy 4-4
2004 Central Valley Coyotes 2-6
2005 Central Valley Coyotes 2-1
"RED-N-BLACK" ZONE: The Coyotes rank first in the league in redzone scoring percentage as they have put up points on 21 of their 24 trips inside the 10-yard line. 17 of those scores have been touchdowns.
Team Success Rate (%)
1. Central Valley Coyotes 21-of-24 87.5
2. Amarillo Dusters 32-of-37 86.5
3. Rio G. Valley Dorados 30-of-36 83.3
4. S. Georgia Wildcats 28-of-34 82.4
FRESNO CONNECTIONS: The Coyote's have several players with local connections including three Fresno State Bulldogs: OL/DL Ahmad Bhatti, and FB/LB JaJuan Huddleston. Coyote WR/DB LaMonte Jones, was a wide receiver at Fresno City College, where Coyote head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. is an offensive coordinator during the offseason.
COYOTE PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Juston Wood: The second-year quarterback looks to surpass the 2,000 yard mark this weekend against the Riptide. Wood currently ranks third in the league in passing yards per game (272.1), third in total yards (1,905) and fourth in total touchdowns (41). He has helped bolster a Coyote offense that averaged 46 points per game after the first four games turn things around as they have averaged over 58 points in their last three. Wood will be tested this week against a San Diego defense that ranks best in the league, giving up just 201 yards per game.
OL/DL Ahmad Bhatti: The fourth-year lineman has been integral part of the Coyote front line. He currently leads the team in sacks with four and a half. Last week against Amarillo he provided relentless pressure up front, recording a sack and providing continuous presser on the Dusters offense. Bhatti also leads the team with three and a half tackles for a loss. In addition to his defense efforts the lineman has seen some time at tight end, catching two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Look for Bhatti to take advantage of a Riptide offensive line that has struggled.
SCORING MACHINE: WR/DB LaMonte Jones has scored a touchdown in 15 of his 21 games as a Coyote. Jones has two touchdowns on the season.

LAST GAME:
COYOTES LOSE TO AMARILLO IN O.T., 68-61
AMARILLO, Tex. (May 21) -- The Central Valley Coyotes (4-3) fell to second place in the West Division after dropping a thrilling overtime battle to the Amarillo Dusters (5-2), 68-61, in front of 3,541 at Amarillo Civic Center.
Quarterback Juston Wood's fourth down pass intended for WR/DB Anthony Arceneaux was batted down in the endzone to end the extra period and seal the Amarillo victory.
"It's too bad that the game had to come down to that after the great effort our offense put fourth," head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. said. "Our guys really laid it all out on the line but we were never able to make a stop when we had to."
The Coyotes led 54-53 with 4:00 remaining in the game after Wood, who was 18-of-34 for 246 yards on the night, ran in his second rushing touchdown. The play was followed by an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
Amarillo answered back when fullback DeWayne Miles ran in his second touchdown of the night a seven-yarder with 1:20 left in the contest. The Dusters were able to extend their lead to 61-54, after quarterback Julian Reese, who was 31-of-19 for 323 yards, ran in a successful two point conversion.
Central Valley sent the game into overtime when wide receiver DeRonn Finley caught a 14-yard fourth-and-ten touchdown pass against the endzone's boards that jarred his helmet loose with 20 seconds left.
"I really thought we were going to be able to carry that momentum into overtime," Wood said. "For DeRonn to hold onto that ball was really something."
Duster's kicker Jeremy Hershey attempted a 30-yard field goal that hit part of the arena's ceiling, causing it to be no good as regulation time expired.
The Coyotes elected to kick in overtime after winning the coin toss, allowing WR/DB Kendrick Walker to return the ensuing kickoff 52 yards for a score and give the Dusters a 68-61 lead just seconds into the extra period.
The Coyotes were unable to respond on their overtime possession at Amarillo 's seven yard line when Wood's fourth-and-two pass that was intended for Arceneaux in the endzone was batted down by a Duster defender.
"I thought I had a great look on the play," said Wood. "Their defender did a great job of getting in there without interfering with Anthony."
Each team traded scores throughout the first half until Amarillo WR/LB D.J. Humphries, who earned "Ironman of the Game" honors, intercepted a Wood pass at the Duster five-yard line with 1:02 left in the second quarter.
The Coyotes responded when DS Joshua Robinson intercepted a Reese pass just before the end of the half.
Down at halftime 35-27, the Coyote's tied the game at 35 on a Wes Borba two-point conversion catch after a three-yard George Williams touchdown run. It was the third of the Coyote's five rushing touchdowns for the game.
Amarillo came right back with a score when WR/DB Chavis McCollister caught his third touchdown but Hershey's extra point missed as it hit the left upright keeping the Duster lead at 41-35.
The offensive display for both team's continued when Wood found WR/LB Marvin Brown for a 20-yard score to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game 42-41 with 5:15 left in the third quarter.
Hershey missed another extra point off the left upright on the ensuing drive to keep the Amarillo lead at five, 47-42.
The Coyotes tried to extend their lead to three after FB/LB Vai Notoa rumbled in for a one-yard touchdown by going for two. The two-point conversion intended for Borba was knocked away, keeping the Coyotes ahead 48-47.
After McCollister added his fourth touchdown, Hershey missed his third-consecutive extra point, this time off of the right upright. When the Coyotes scored on the next drive they were once unable to convert their second-straight two-point conversion attempt while clinging on to a 54-53 lead with 6:20 left.
"Looking back, we really wish we would have come away with the points," Biletnikoff Jr. said. "At the time we really thought a three point lead would be valuable but they were able to respond. We had plenty of other chances to win this game."
Coyote FB/LB Clint Merz earned "Defensive Player of the Game" honors with four tackles (two for losses) and a sack.
Amarillo 's McCollister earned "Offensive Player of the Game" honors after finishing the night with 12 catches for 224 yards and four touchdowns.
The loss dropped the Coyotes into second place as division-leading Tulsa beat Macon , 61-39, to improve to 5-2.
Central Valley will remain on the road this weekend to take on the division rival San Diego Riptide on Saturday May 28 at ipayOne Center in San Diego . Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1430 AM.

PREVIOUS MEETING WITH SAN DIEGO:
COYOTES SPOIL RIPTIDE'S PLAYOFF HOPES, 48-34
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July, 30, 2004) -- The Central Valley Coyotes ended their season on a high note, defeating the San Diego Riptide, 48-34 and finishing the season on a two game winning streak at the San Diego Sports Arena tonight. The Coyotes were able to spoil any post-season hopes the Riptide had in mind, dominating the entire game offensively and defensively.
Head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. decided to go with a dual arsenal at quarterback, rotating Frank Borba and Juston Wood each quarter. The scheme paid off as the two combined for 192 yards and 4 TDs on 21-of-34 passing.
The Coyotes defensive came out on fire in the first quarter, holding the Riptide to only one touchdown and forcing two turnovers.
On San Diego's first offensive drive, they found themselves in a third-and-one situation at their own thirteen yard line. Defensive Player of the Game VonKeith Spencer intercepted a Kevin Feterik pass and returned it 19-yards for the score to give the Coyotes the early lead.
San Diego marched down the field on their next possession, aided by Central Valley penalties and scored on an 11-yard TD pass from Feterik to Jesus Reyes. San Diego kicker, Chris Arnce missed the extra point opportunity and the Coyotes kept the lead, 7-6.
Central Valley found the endzone on their next possession when Frank Borba hooked up with LaMonte Jones on an 11-yard TD pass.
The Coyotes defense held strong again, forcing the Riptide offense to turn the ball over on downs on the Central Valley six-yard line.
Juston Wood pushed the lead out to 14 points for the Coyotes when he completed a 16-yard TD pass to Marvin Brown.
San Diego missed a 26-yard field goal on their next offensive possession giving Central Valley back the ball.
Wood drove the Coyotes to another touchdown on a 5-play, 12-yard drive that was capped off by a 5-yard TD reception by Kenyatte Morgan.
VonKeith Spencer intercepted his second pass of the game as the Riptide attempted a last minute touchdown to end the half.
Each team traded a pair of touchdowns to open up the second half. The Riptide scored when Trevor Misipeka sacked Frank Borba who fumbled the ball, and Henry Stephens returned it back 19-yards for the touchdown.
On the following kickoff, the Riptide attempted an onside kick, but Jabari Jackson scooped up the ball and returned it 5-yards for the score, leaving Central Valley on top, 34-13.
San Diego added one more touchdown to end the third quarter as Nakoa McElrath intercepted a Frank Borba pass and returned it 46-yards for the score.
Each team again traded a pair of touchdowns to open up the fourth quarter, as Nakoa McElrath scored on a 10-yard reception and Darnell Lacy scored on a 13-yard TD reception.
San Diego made one final attempt to catch the Coyotes as Kevin Feterik hooked up with Dwight Carter on 7-yard TD reception. A successful two-point conversion brought the Riptide within in seven points, 41-34.
Central Valley recovered the ensuing onside kick and looked to run out the clock with :26 seconds remaining, but Juston Wood carried the ball eleven yards on a dive play to seal the game for the Coyotes.
A final offensive attempt was made by the Riptide, but on 4th-and-10 from the Coyotes 21, Riptide quarterback Kevin Feterik was sacked by Jabari Jackson with no time remaining on the clock.
The win now puts head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. at 2-0 since dropping the interim tag off of his title.
