(Southaven, MS) - The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have announced the addition of center Mike Stevens to their roster, as training camp opens up at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven this week.

Stevens comes to the RiverKings after a four-year career with the University of Southern Maine, NCAA Division Three school located in Portland, Maine. He was a teammate of RiverKings' defenseman Dane Marshall while playing with the Huskies.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound center man was born in Hyannis, Massachusetts and resides in Dover, New Hampshire.

During his career, Stevens played in 100 games for the Huskies, becoming the 15th player in USM history to make that many game appearances. The 100 game appearances place him ninth all-time in that category at the school.

Stevens averaged just short of a point a game during his collegiate career, finishing up with 31 goals and 68 assists for 99 points. The 68 assists put Mike in a tie for the school record for helpers in a career and the 99 points place him third all-time in overall scoring.

12 goals came on the power play, three were shorthanded and seven became game-winning goals. Stevens also amassed 174 penalty minutes in his time with Southern Maine.

Career honors for Stevens during his time at USM included being named twice to the ECAC East All-Academic Team (2006-07, 2007-08), and was named to the league's All-Rookie Team at the end of the 2004-05 season. It was in his freshman year that he was twice named the ECAC East's Rookie of the Week (November 23rd and February 22nd)

According to RiverKings' Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski, "The report on Mike is he's supposed to be a solid center that is strong on the puck and can make the plays. Mike also has good hockey sense, with a great attitude and work ethic."

Mike has been impressed with what he's seen from the team thus far, and he believes he brings some valuable skills as a center man to the RiverKings. "I think I see the ice very well, I'm a very good passer, and I like to move the puck fast. I also think I play very good defense, so hopefully I can work well there, too."

The first game of the RiverKings' 2008-09 Central Hockey League season is Friday, October 17th, against the Wichita Thunder. The 7:05 PM home opening contest is brought to you by Cellular South. For more information on tickets, contact the RiverKings' office at 662-342-1755 today!
