Cedar Rapids Frustrates Hawks

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders led for most of Saturday's game, eventually doubling up the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-2 at Young Arena.

James Norton made 24 saves, and the visitors scored two crucial power play goals. Cedar Rapids' win even the teams up at six standings points apiece through the first five meetings.

The RoughRiders went to an early power play and converted it into the only goal in the first period. At 4:55 Loa Milfors blasted in a one-timer from the left circle on a setup by Jack Larrigan. Waterloo killed off two more Cedar Rapids power plays in the period.

Past the midpoint of the second, the teams were skating five-on-five, but a prolonged sequence in the Black Hawks zone made it look like the RoughRiders were on an advantage. At 13:26, Riley Bassen flipped in an insurance goal on a rebound at the top of the crease.

Waterloo answered during a power play just over three minutes later. Gavyn Thoreson slid a pass across the slot from circle to circle, with Tyler Miller waiting on the receiving end to fire in his chance.

The Hawks' other goal also came from a defenseman. Will Felicio tied the game on a shot from the left point, which was redirected in off a defender.

Ben Muthersbaugh provided the game-winner during the next RoughRider power play chance at 10:29. The forward hit the net from the right circle after receiving a cross-ice feed.

Myles Hilman redirected a puck into the net four minutes later during the Hawks' final advantage. However, the celebration was short and ultimately unfounded; a review determined that Hilman tipped the chance with a high stick.

Cedar Rapids' Amine Hajibi scored a final goal into an empty net from center ice with 1:28 to play.

The Black Hawks go east for three games next week, opening the trip in Youngstown Thursday morning.
