Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry News Release

LAWTON, OKLA- Oklahoma Cavs players Nate Green, Curtis Haywood, Pierre Darden and Assistant Coach Greg Minor visited Swinney Elementary Friday afternoon to participate in their Read Across America program.

Since March 3 was Dr. Seuss' birthday, the Cavs read books written by the author. Carol Gardner, coordinator of the Read Across America program, gave each reader their own "Cat in the Hat" hat to wear while they read.

Forwards Green and Haywood read to the kindergartners and to the first graders. The first graders had a few laughs when Haywood animatedly read "Are You My Mom?" to the class.

The students enjoyed hearing Green read "Salt in My Shoes," a short story of Michael Jordan's child hood determination to be a basketball superstar. The kids asked Nate at the end of the story if he put salt in his shoes to grow to be 6'8''.

Coach Minor involved Mrs. Wahkinney's second grade class. He called each student up to point out different items in the Dr. Seuss book.

All the Cavs invited the students out to the weekend games and to their first playoff game on Tuesday, March 11.

"The kids were so excited to have the players out here. I think it's great that they have taken time out of their hectic schedule to come to Swinney," said Gardner.

At the end of the day, the Cavs dismissed the students with high fives in front of the school.

The Cavs will play their first playoff game tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the number one Yakama Sun Kings.
