Caveney Scores Four as Ice Flyers Down RiverKings 8-4

PENSACOLA, FL. (January 26, 2014) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers hosted the Mississippi RiverKings in a Sunday matinee tilt that had been rescheduled from last night due to the RiverKings' travel difficulties. The Ice Flyers took advantage of the extra time to prepare and won 8-4.
The Ice Flyers were first on the board when Joe Caveney scored 9:02 into the game. Caveney camped out to the side of the RiverKings' net and one-timed a pass from Podge Turnbull, burying it behind Mississippi's Matthew Krahn. Turnbull and Corey Banfield assisted on the goal. That was the only goal in a period that saw the Ice Flyers outshoot the RiverKings 14-8.
Caveney struck again 5:23 into the second when he stickhandled his way around the RiverKings' defenseman and deked Krahn out of position. Banfield picked up the lone assist on Caveney's second goal. Mississippi's Mike Grace cut the lead down to 2-1 with a long blast from the point on a power play. Caveney completed his hat trick with a power play goal that came with 7:29 left in the middle period. Banfield and Shaun Arvai contributed the helpers on the tally. The RiverKings' Grace struck again with just 23 seconds left in the period to make it 3-2.
Caveney got his fourth goal of the game only 1:32 into the third. Turnbull and Banfield assisted on the marker. Florida-native Malcolm Lyles scored 1:01 later after taking a pass from Brett Lutes and then dekeing out Krahn. Lutes had the only assist on what proved to be the game-winning goal. The RiverKings' Sean Jones cut the lead down to 5-3 when he scored a power play goal just under six minutes into the third.
Lutes got a goal of his own 10:07 into the third. John Dunbar and Ryan Salvis assisted on the tally. Shaun Arvai pushed the lead out to 7-3 with a power play goal. Lutes and Salvis had the helpers on the goal that came with 6:57 remaining in the third. Mississippi's Matt Harrington made it 7-4 about a minute and a half after Arvai's goal. Salvis picked up an unassisted goal with 4:40 remaining in the game. Salvis' goal proved to be the last goal of the game and the Ice Flyers won it 8-4.
Ross MacKinnon stopped 19 of the RiverKings' 23 shots in his first game since rejoining the Ice Flyers. Salvis was named the third star, Lutes second, and Caveney the first star of the game.
The Ice Flyers' next game will be Friday, Jan. 31 as they take on the Bloomington Thunders for the first time ever at 7:05 p.m. in the Pensacola Bay Center. It will be Dan Buccella Retirement Night and Teddy Bear Toss Night in the Hangar.
