Mississippi RiverKings News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Pensacola Ice Flyers (21-13-2) exploded for five goals in the third period as the Mississippi RiverKings (19-11-3) dropped their third consecutive game, an 8-4 loss in Pensacola.
Pensacola took the lead midway through a low-scoring first period. Joe Caveney's wrist shot beat Matt Krahn to put the Ice Flyers on top 1-0, a lead they took into the first intermission.
In the second, the game opened up. Caveney tallied his second goal of the night for the Flyers 5:23 into the period. But the RiverKings battled back on a power play goal from Mike Grace off the face off to cut their deficit back to one. Caveney completed the hat trick on a power play of his own for the Ice Flyers before Sean Jones tallied his first professional goal on Ross MacKinnon with just 23 seconds remaining in the second period to send the RiverKings into the locker room down by just one heading into the final period of play.
The Ice Flyers started the scoring in the third and did not let up. Caveney picked up his fourth goal of the night just 1:32 in before Malcolm Lyles hammered a rebound home past Krahn a minute later to give the Ice Flyers a 5-2 lead.
The RiverKings chipped their way back in minutes later. Jones notched his second goal of the night past a scrambling MacKinnon on the power play to cut the Ice Flyers' lead back to two.
Pensacola regained their three-goal lead four minutes later. Brett Lutes' shot beat Krahn between the legs to push the score to 6-3. The teams traded goals a minute and a half apart. Shaun Arvai notched a power-play goal for the Ice Flyers before Matt Harrington slid the puck between the legs of MacKinnon, giving the Ice Flyers a 7-4 lead. Ryan Salvis ended the scoring with an unassisted goal, sliding the puck past a diving Krahn, to give Pensacola the 8-4 victory.
Matt Krahn (9-4-3) took the loss after stopping 37 of 45 shots against. Ross MacKinnon (8-1-1) stopped 19 of 23 shots against in the win.
The RiverKings return to the Landers Center on Tuesday morning for the Belhaven University Face Off Field Trip at 10:35 a.m. Be sure to catch all the action online on the America One Sports Network.
