Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (July 7, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners have announced that shortstop Ryan Cavan and closer Derrick Miramontes have been voted in as Frontier League All-Stars for the 2014 season. They will both participate in the 2014 Frontier League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 16th, at GCS Ballpark in Sau- get, Ill., home of the Gateway Grizzlies.
For Cavan, who was also selected as the starting shortstop for the East division, it is the second year in a row that he has been named an All-Star, having also been so named last season while playing for the San Jose Gi- ants, the High-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in the California League. After a slow start to the season, the Belmont, California native has turned up the heat since the month of June started. Cavan is hitting .318 since June 1st, with four of his six doubles, 18 of his 20 RBIs and both of his home runs on the season in that span. He has also been tremendous defensively for Southern Illinois, making just four errors since the month of June began, and only two of those miscues in 24 games since June 8th while play- ing a premium defensive position at shortstop for almost the entire season.
Miramontes, instantly recognizable for his unique delivery, has also been named to the All-Star team this sea- son. It is his second Frontier League All-Star selection, having previously been selected in 2011 as a member of the River City Rascals. The Miners' closer, who returned to the team after beginning his professional career in Southern Illinois back in 2009, has had a tremendous season, converting 10 saves in 12 chances over 22 total appearances. In 26 2/3 innings, the right-hander has given up only five earned runs on 17 hits for a 1.68 ERA. He has walked seven and struck out 27 this season, a ratio of nearly 4:1.
Fans can order tickets to the All-Star festivities, which begin on July 15th with the Home Run Derby and the "Battle of the Sexes" Softball Showcase, when the Frontier League All-Stars battle the Chicago Bandits pro fastpitch softball team, and conclude with the All-Star Game itself the next night, by calling the Gateway Griz- zlies box office at (618) 337-3000, or online at www.gatewaygrizzlies.com.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
