Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats defeated the McAllen Thunder 6-4 on Wednesday night at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX. Right fielder Chuck Caufield gave Thunder starter Frank James the most trouble with a 3-for-4 performance. Caufield drove in a run on a single in a three-run bottom of the fourth and then started off another three-run inning with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth.

"I'm just trying to stay short and put a good swing and fortunately I had a few fall my way," Caufield said.

James gave up all six Cats' runs on ten hits and was pulled after six innings. James struck out four and walked two. Fort Worth reliever Steve Barnes picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless and hitless relief for starter Kane Holbrook. Cats' closer Jeff Jamnik picked up his third save on the season.

Caufield was part of a trio of Cats' hitters with two runs batted in. Center fielder Randall Thorpe impressed the fans more with his bat than in the field tonight batting 2-for-4 with a triple. Thorpe's second hit was a single that drove in two as part of the three-run fourth inning for Fort Worth.

"I'm just trying to have a consistent approach," Thorpe said.

The Cats' RBI machine and left fielder Chad Gabriel had only one hit but ever so important knocking in two on a single in the sixth inning to give the Cats their first lead of the game.

"I was just trying to battle," Caufield said.

With the win, the Cats improve their record to 5-3 and sit two games behind the San Angelo Colts, who will host the Cats Thursday and Friday nights. The Thunder's record falls to 2-6 and they sit in last place, five games behind the Colts. The Cats face the Colts for the first of a two game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Foster Field in San Angelo, TX. The Thunder travel to Edinburgh to play the Roadrunners at 7:05 p.m. at Edinburgh Stadium.
