Fort Worth Cats News Release
Angel Aragon allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work as Fort Worth defeated Shreveport 3-1 Friday night at LaGrave Field.
With the win, the Cats record improves to 21-18 on the season and they pull to within one game of division-leading Pensacola.
The Cats jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning when Greg Strickland scored on a passed ball. Then, Jason Radwan brought home a run when his ground out caromed off the hand of Shreveport starter Ian Doiron making it 2-0 Cats and ending Doiron's night.
The Cats added to their lead in the second inning when Jeremy Smith hit his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot into the bleachers in left, giving the Cats a 3-0 advantage.
Shreveport's only run in the game came on a Derek Patterson sacrifice fly scoring Vernon Spearman in the third inning.
With the two-run lead in his pocket, Aragon (5-2) cruised through the middle innings, striking out six en route to his fifth win of the season.
Doiron, who left the game due to injury in the first inning, took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits. Reliever Jason Slanina pitched 6 1/3 innings and permitted just a run on six hits to keep the Sports in the game after Doiron's early exit.
The Cats look for their fourth straight win on Saturday night in Game 2 of the series. Left-hander Allen Davis goes for Fort Worth and will be opposed by Chad Yates.
