Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Moncton Wildcats won their first game of the 2010 pre-season tonight defeating the PEI Rocket 5-4 in a shootout at the RedBall Internet Centre. Allian Saulnier, Kelsey Tessier and Alex Saulnier scored for the Cats in the shootout, while Wildcat goalie Ian Roberts stopped two out of three Rocket shooters. Alex MacDonald had a goal and two assists to help lead the Wildcats to victory while Thomas Flynn chipped in with three assists.
The two teams played a tight first period and headed into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Rocket opened the scoring 18 seconds into the game when Josh Currie finished off a two on one. The Wildcats got an equalizer thanks to MacDonald's blast from the point that found its way through traffic into the back of the net. The Rocket held a slight eight to seven shot edge after the opening frame.
The Cats got a 5 on 3 powerplay early in the 2nd period and they took advantage of the opportunity. Tessier jammed the puck in from the side of the net to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game. The Rocket tied the game at two on a powerplay of their own. Andrej Nestrasil finished off a pretty passing play to level the game at two heading into the 3rd period. Moncton held a slight 10-8 edge in shots in the 2nd period.
Each team was able to find the back of the net twice in the 3rd period. Dylan Capstick put the Rocket ahead with a powerplay goal at 2:49. Adam Guy was able to get the cats even and then with just under six minutes remaining Cameron MacDonald put Moncton ahead. Jordan Escott tied the game at 4, two minutes later, setting the stage for a shootout.
The Wildcats scored on all three of their shootout attempts to get their first win of the pre-season. Cats' goalie's Shane Owen and Ian Roberts combined to stop 25 of the 29 shots they faced for the win. Evan Mosher and Maxime Legace of the Rocket faced 28 Wildcat shots, combining to stop 24. On the powerplay the Wildcats capitalized on one of their six opportunities while PEI went two for six.
These two teams face each other again tomorrow night in Pownal PEI at the Pownal Sports Centre, game time is 7pm.
