Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Gary South Shore Railcats could not hold on to an early lead as they lost 5-4 to the Sioux City Explorers.

The Cats got on the board in the third inning as, with one out, Danny Pulfer singled and Drew Martinez followed with an RBI triple. Zac Mitchell knocked him in with a base hit and the Cats went ahead 2-0.

Cats' starter Morgan Coombs, after missing his last start due to injury, held Sioux City scoreless in the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Explorers were able to bust through with an RBI single from Rene Tosoni and an RBI fielder's choice from Andres Perez, tying the game at 2-2.

The Cats did not waste any time taking the lead back, starting with base hits from Craig Maddox and Cody Bishop to lead off the sixth. Wally Backman drove Maddox home with a base hit through the left side and a two-out single from Drew Muren scored Bishop, putting the Cats back in front 4-2.

Unfortunately for the Cats, the lead did not last for long as the first four batters of the sixth inning reached against Morgan Coombs, cutting the lead to 4-3 and knocking Coombs out of the game. Reliever Chuck Fontana came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs and gave up an RBI base hit to Oscar Mesa that tied the game. A sacrifice fly from Tosoni pushed another run across and gave the Explorers a 5-4 lead.

The Explorers bullpen was solid, holding the Cats scoreless in 3.1 innings of work following a decent start from Alex Caldera. Drew Martinez doubled with two outs in the ninth to make things interesting, but he was stranded at second as Sioux City held on to 5-4 victory.

The RailCats will finish up the four game set with Sioux City tomorrow night at 7:05. Dan Vaughan has the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
