Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (July 24, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts have looked to the Brownsville Charros of the United League for a second time to add a position player that is good defensively and will provide more depth to an already jam-packed lineup. After trading for first baseman Trevor Whyte at the end of June, the Wingnuts have signed outfielder Jake Luce, who played his 45 games this season with the Charros. Wichita also activated Jared Gaynor from the disabled list and released Whyte and Alan Williams on Thursday.

The 24-year old Luce (pronounced LOO-chee) is in the midst of his third professional season. He began his career with the Amarillo Sox, also of the American Association, back in 2012. The 25-year old hit .211 in 27 games with the Wingnuts' current South Division rival after joining the team at the conclusion of his collegiate season at Elon University. The next year he played in just six games with the Rockford Aviators of the Frontier League.

This season, he was hitting .299 with Brownsville and had driven in 26 runs with five home runs. With 12 stolen bases this season he will blend in nicely with a Wingnuts roster that already has five members with double digit steals. This season he has career best numbers in on-base percentage (.360) and slugging percentage (.441).

Gaynor, a rookie from George Mason, went on the disabled list on July 19th and last took the mound on July 7th. He will join the bullpen with no record and 4.50 ERA. Gaynor has allowed three runs in six innings over two appearances, one of them a start and one in relief.

Williams began the season in the rotation, but was moved to the bullpen after four times through. He finished up his time in Wichita with a 2-3 record and 9.60 ERA in 14 appearances.

Whyte was the everyday first baseman during his 26 games with the Wingnuts. He was acquired via trade from Brownsville for a player to be named later on June 24th. He was hitting .211 with four home runs and 11 RBI. All of the long balls came at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
