Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

In yet another example of not bowing to conventional wisdom, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have announced the signing of KAVIS REED as the team's new Defensive Coordinator

Reed, who has called the CFL home since turning pro as a defensive back with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1995, will be entering only his fourth season in the League's coaching ranks. The Georgetown, South Carolina native spent the last two seasons as the Defensive Backs coach with the Ottawa Renegades. In the 2002 season, Reed held the dual role of Defensive Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator with the Renegades. In 2001, Reed coached defensive backs with the Toronto Argonauts.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Head Coach Greg Marshall expressed great confidence in the 30 year old Reed. "Both General Manager Ron Lancaster and I knew from the first time we met him several weeks ago that he was the guy we wanted to be our defensive boss." According to Marshall, "Kavis is a bright, intelligent and hard-working young coach who comes highly recommended from coaches who have worked with him and he was very much in demand. He's a great communicator and teacher and someone whose high energy level, infectious enthusiasm and genuine dedication for the game makes him truly a player's coach!"

Reed says he looks upon the move to Hamilton as one that provides a great opportunity. "I feel that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are making all the right moves to be a successful football team not only for this season but for many seasons to come. They have some talented and experienced veterans on the defensive side of the ball. My goal as Defensive Coordinator will be to present the players with the opportunity to be successful, to operate with one heartbeat and one purpose and that is to win games!"

Reed completed his CFL playing career with the Edmonton Eskimos after the 1999 season due to injury. But what a career, albeit short; 205 defensive tackles and 20 interceptions in 67 games. He shares the Eskimos' career record and is tied for third on the League's career list with 5 interception returns for touchdowns and is fifth on the Eskimos' career list with 481 yards on interception returns. In the 1997 season, Reed was voted a CFL All-Canadian and a West Division All-Star.

Kavis Reed and his wife, Darlene Katherine, have two children, a daughter, Tyra Mackenzie aged 3 and a son, 1 year old Tarik.
