June 3, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release
The Fort Worth Cats defeated the San Angelo Colts 6-3 in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, TX.
Left fielder Chad Gabriel, catcher Derek Marshall, and right fielder Chuck Caufield all took pitches out of the park in the night cap of the doubleheader. Gabriel hit a two-run homerun following a RJ Harris single in the first inning. Gabriel would finish 3-for-4 and 6-for-8 on the day with one run and four runs batted in. Gabriel now leads the North American League in runs batted in with 16.
"I had no idea I was leading the league," Gabriel said. "I just try to come out and contribute to the team on a daily basis."
Gabriel knocked in second baseman CJ Beatty on RBI singles in both the second and fourth innings.
CJ Beatty made his Fort Worth debut today and despite a slow start in the first game, drew three walks in this game, stole two bases, and scored twice thanks to Gabriel. Marshall and Caufield hit homeruns to lead off the second and fifth innings respectively.
Cats' reliever Steve Barnes (2-0) got the start today and pitched five innings, only giving up two runs on five hits. Barnes struck out four and also walked four. Barnes had pitched seven innings in three games all season before today and was given the starting role to help rest the guys in the rotation.
"I was pretty excited," Barnes said. "Starting is what I need to do to get to the next level."
Closer Jeff Jamnik picked up his sixth save of the season with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Jamnik now leads the North American League in saves.
San Angelo center fielder Ronnie Gaines was responsible for three of the Colts' five hits. Gaines finished 3-for-4 with a run batted in.
Left fielder Jamar Walton was responsible for the San Angelo's second earned run. Walton was 0-for-2 in the game but knocked in a run on his groundout in the fourth inning.
Colts' starter Chris Peacock (0-2) allowed four of the Cats' six runs and all five of their hits in only three innings of work. In the three innings that San Angelo's bullpen pitched, the Cats only had two runs on three hits.
Fort Worth and San Angelo will both take two days off before returning to LaGrave Field for three more matchups. The Cats improve their record to 9-4 and regain sole possession of first place in the South division of the North American League. The Colts' record falls to 8-5. The next game for both teams will be Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at LaGrave Field.
