'Cats Get First Win in Back-And-Forth Battle

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Following Opening Night's blowout loss, the Gary SouthShore RailCats scraped out a 4-3 "RailCatin'" victory over the Quebec les Capitales Friday at the U.S. Steel Yard.

After both teams scored a run in the first inning, the starting pitchers began an exciting duel. 'Cats starter Andy Roberts and Quebec lefty Sheldon McDonald kept the game tied 1-1 through the sixth inning.

From there, whenever the Capitales (1-1) drove a run in, Gary (1-1) had an answer.

Quebec pushed an unearned run across in the seventh on a bobbled ball in left, but the RailCats responded when Ryan Brockett's fielder's choice scored Carlton Salters, who led off the inning with a double.

The Capitales capitalized on a defensive mistake in the eighth, and the RailCats had to battle back for the third time in the game.

An Adam Taylor sac fly that fell just short of the stands in right field tied the game before Sam Lind came off the bench an untied it with an infield hit.

Closer Andy Loomis shut the door in the ninth, dropping the Capitales' in order with two strikeouts.

Roberts finished his day giving up one run on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Jessie Snodgrass got the win for his two innings of relief out of the 'pen.

The Capitales and RailCats play game three of the four-game series Saturday with a special 3:10 p.m. start time.
