Laredo Lemurs News Release
Laredo, TX "" A four run first held up for the Laredo Lemurs (2-1) as they went on to beat the Amarillo Thunderheads (1-2) 4-2 in a rain shorted game on Saturday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.
The Lemurs jumped out in front early as they put up all four of their runs in the first inning. The first inning offense was started by Lemurs lead-off man D'Vontrey Richardson, who doubled. Abel Nieves walked to put runners and first and second base with no one out. First baseman Matt Padgett would then come to the plate and laced a single into right center to drive in Richardson and give the Lemurs a 1-0 lead. Denis Phipps followed up the Padgett hit with a double that brought home Nieves, making it 2-0 Lemurs with no outs in the inning. The next two runs would be scored with one out after Byron Wiley struck out and A.J. Kirby-Jones walked to put runners at every base. Kevin Taylor was the next batter and he hit into a fielder's-choice to the first baseman Danny Steinstra. Steinstra threw to second to get Kirby-Jones out and on the return throw to first the shortstop Juan Martinez threw the ball into the dugout. Padgett scored when the ball was put in play and Phipps came home on the error to give the Lemurs a 4-0 lead after one frame.
The top of the second inning would see the Thunderheads cut the lead in half with two runs. The designated hitter Rene Leveret hit a solo home run (his first of the year) with one out off Lemurs starter Matt Loosen to cut Laredo's lead to 4-1. The next batters, Jason Martin and Juan Martinez, walked to put runners at first and second base. Danny Steinstra then came to the plate and he would pick up a single to drive in Martin from second base to make it 4-2 Lemurs. With runners at first and second, Loosen walked the base loaded and that would be the end of his night, as Lemurs manager Pete Incaviglia pulled him out of the game and brought in Scott Garner. Garner got the last out of the inning to keep the Lemurs up 4-2 after an inning and a half.
Scott Garner (1-0) went on to pitch 2.1 innings without giving up a run or a hit. He recorded one strikeout. Garner would earn the win in the rain shortened game moving his record to 1-0 on the year.
Former Major Leaguer Billy Petrick (0-1) took the loss, pitching four and giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts to his credit.
The Lemurs play the final game of the series tomorrow night at 6:00PM. The Lemurs lead the four game series 2-1 as they get ready to wrap up the first home stand of the season.
