Cats Drop First Game of Road Trip, Now Tied for First Place

June 19, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats could only muster hitting from the first three in their batting order as they fell 7-2 to begin their eight-game road trip.

The top of the Cats batting order went 5-for-11 with 2 runs and 1 run batted in. However, the rest of the lineup was hitless as WhiteWings pitcher Luis Chirinos stifled Fort Worth's bats. Chirinos picked up his third win of the season.

Hitting was not a problem for Rio Grande Valley as they registered 7 RBIs on 20 hits, including 2 RBIs from league-leading Fidel Hernandez.

Cats starter James Giulietti started strong but began to struggle in the fifth inning. The bottom of the fifth began with three straight singles followed by an RBI groundout by Juan Fuentes. Two walks in a row by Giulietti scored another run followed by a fielder's choice.

Kane Holbrooks relieved Giulietti but gave up two more in the frame to give Rio Grande Valley a 5-2 lead. Fort Worth couldn't muster any comebacks after that.

First place in the South Division of the North American Baseball League is now in a tie between the Fort Worth Cats and Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. The two teams continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05 pm at Harlingen Field.

The Fort Worth Cats return home on June 27 to host the McAllen Thunder.
