'Cats Drop Doubleheader to Williamsport

June 29, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

After winning two games to the Stedler Division-leading Lowell Spinners, the Tri-City ValleyCats dropped both seven inning games of a doubleheader to the Williamsport Crosscutters 8-5 and 7-3, respectively. Game 1 was a makeup of Tuesday night's rain out.

Game 1

The 'Cats started off on the wrong foot when lefty Brett Adcock exited his start after only two pitches. Adcock gave up a double on the first pitch of the game to David Martinelli, then rolled his ankle trying to field a sacrifice bunt from the next batter. The 4th round pick of this year's draft was removed from the game and will be re-evaluated by team trainer John Gregorich tomorrow.

Kevin Hill made his professional debut in relief of Adcock, allowing only a hit and a walk in two innings, striking out two. Luis Ramirez (1-1) took the loss for the 'Cats in relief of Hill, allowing four runs (two earned) in three innings.

Ranger Suarez (1-0) earned the win for the Crosscutters, stiking out five and allowing four to score on six hits in five innings.

The ValleyCats collected eight hits in Game 1, including two solo homeruns to right field from Stephen Wrenn (5). Shortshop Alex DeGoti chipped in a two-RBI base hit to right-centerfield in the second inning, scoring Carmen Benedetti and Ryne Birk.

Williamsport scored in all but two innings, including a three-run fifth which featured a two-run single from catcher Henri Lartigue.

Game 2

Austin Nicely (1-1) took the hill for the ValleyCats in Game Two with the lowest ERA on the team, and left after it had ballooned to 5.40. Nicely took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in three innings, walking one. The 'Cats bullpen was stellar in relief of Nicely, as Nick Hernandez struck out four batters in three innings, giving up only a solo homerun to Luke Maglich.

Chris Cotton, a member of the 'Cats 2013 New York-Penn League Championship team, struck out the side in the seventh inning. Cotton is on a 10-day rehab stint from the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies.

Seranthony Dominguez (1-1) kept Tri-City in check for the five innigs he tossed, allowing two unearned runs and only one hit, striking out five. In relief, Alex Kline and Will Hibbs combined for two innings on one-run ball.

Offensively, the ValleyCats managed only two hits from Jake Rogers and Randy Cesar.

Next up
