Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 4-2, on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field. Auburn scored four runs throughout the final four innings of the game to grab the win.
Mahoning Valley (3-10) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning off Auburn left-hander Tyler Watson. Erlin Cerda led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center field to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead.
The Scrappers scored again in the fifth inning. Michael Tinsley led off with a single. Cerda followed with a triple to score Tinsley and give Mahoning Valley a two-run advantage, 2-0.
The Doubledays (8-5) scored for the first time in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Ryan Ripken tripled to right-center field. Ripken scored when Tres Barrera grounded out to the shortstop, Luke Wakamatsu, as Auburn cut Mahoning Valley's lead to one, 2-1.
Auburn scored again in the seventh inning. Paul Panaccione reached base on an error. Jake Jefferies followed with a single to right field. Panaccione was thrown out at third base on the play by right fielder Jodd Carter for the first out of the inning. After Clayton Brandt lined out to third base, Blake Perkins and Daniel Johnson both walked to load the bases with two outs. Sheldon Neuse then worked a walk to score Jefferies and tie the game at two.
The Doubledays took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning. A pitch hitch hit Barrera to put a runner on first with no outs. Nick Banks then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Barrera to second base. After a Panaccione strike out, Jake Jefferies hit a ball to second base. Cerda, the second baseman, fielded the ball and threw it to first, but first baseman Emmanuel Tapia didn't catch the ball cleanly. Jefferies was safe at first base, and Barrera scored to give Auburn a one-run lead, 3-2.
Auburn scored for a fourth time in the ninth inning. With one out, Neuse and Ripken hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second base. Barrera then hit a single to left field to score Neuse and put the Doubledays on top, 4-2.
Auburn relievers Jacob Howell and Kevin Mooney combined for four perfect innings of relief work. Howell got the win in his first appearance with the Doubledays, and Mooney collected the save.
The Doubledays and Scrappers conclude their three-game series Thursday night at Eastwood Field. Left-hander McKenzie Mill will pitch for Auburn against Mahonong Valley right-hander Luis Jimenez. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
