
Vermont Sweeps Aberdeen 5-3 And 2-0

BURLINGTON, VT - Miguel Mercedes and JaVon Shelby went a combined 6-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI in the opener, while three Vermont pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as the Lake Monsters swept the Aberdeen Ironbirds 5-3 and 2-0 in a New York-Penn League doubleheader Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
It was the first sweep of a doubleheader for Vermont at Centennial Field since the Lake Monsters swept Oneonta on June 27, 2009. Since then Vermont had split its last 14 doubleheaders played at Centennial.
Mercedes gave Vermont a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one with an RBI single, then tied the game 2-2 in the third with another RBI single. Shelby followed with an RBI single of his own and the Lake Monsters added two more runs in the inning on a throwing error and wild pitch.
Vermont starter Dakota Chalmers allowed three runs, including solo homers to Collin Woody and Cole Billingsley, on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Chalmers (2-0) came out after hitting back-to-back Ironbirds with one out in the sixth, but reliever Nolan Blackwood retired the final five batters of the game to record the save in his professional debut.
Luis Barrera led off the game with a bunt single to etend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. Travis Seabrooke (1-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits over five innings to take the loss for Aberdeen (5-7).
In nightcap, Eli White singled home Sean Murphy in the bottom of the second inning to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Starter Brendan Butler allowed three hits with one walk and four strikeouts over four scoreless innings, while Derek Beasley one walk and one strikeout in two hitless innings. Yordy Alejo tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning for his first save of the season.
Murphy and Jhonny Rodriguez both went 2-for-3 with 1 run scored for Vermont (6-7), while Jeong-Hyeon Yoon (0-2) allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over four-plus innings to take the loss for Aberdeen (5-8).
Vermont will look to complete its first-ever three-game sweep of Aberdeen whenn the Lake Monsters host the Ironbirds on Thursday starting at 7:05 pm. It is First Responders Night presented by Vermont State Police & Green Mountain Concert Services.
