Cats Dash Colts' Playoff Hopes with Doubleheader Split

August 13, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats squandered an early lead in both games of Monday's doubleheader, and after faltering late in game one, the team scored late in game two to knock the San Angelo Colts out of playoff contention.

Game one

The Cats (49-29) scored early in both games and in game two it was courtesy of a first inning three run home run by David Bergin. The blast came with no outs in the game, but Colts starter and former Cat Eric Sheridan settled down and did not allow any further damage.

The Colts (38-40) cut into the lead with a run in the fourth inning and then took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth.

Cats' starter Will Krout went the distance, but was still tagged with the loss as he gave up three earned runs and struck out five without allowing a walk.

Game two

The Cats jumped ahead with runs in the first and second innings in game two, but gave up the lead in the sixth again as the Colts came around to tie the game on a Braden Embry single.

However, the tie was short-lived as the Cats brought across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth when Cameron Monger scored on an errant throw by first baseman Steve Rinaudo to the pitcher covering first.

Relief pitcher Jeff Sakowski earned the win. He came on in the sixth in relief of Matt Eshleman who allowed the only batter he faced to reach on a bunt single. He allowed his inherited runner to score but worked out of a bases loaded jam.

With the loss, the Colts are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The Cats will face the Edinburg Roadrunners in the five-game championship series beginning Thursday night at LaGrave Field.

Tickets to the remaining regular season games and postseason games can be purchased by going online to FWCats.com or by calling (817) 332-CATS.
