North Adams SteepleCats News Release
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - North Adams strung together seven hits on the night, but the SteepleCats could not get anything going offensively against Saratoga, as the Brigade blanked the visitors, 3-0, in a NECBL West Division battle at East Side Recreation Field.
Suffering their fourth shutout loss of the season, the SteepleCats (12-16) fall to a season-high four games under .500 after failing to put a run on the board despite seven hits, while the Brigade (14-14) snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
Starter *Scott Squier (Hawaii)* gave up just three runs in the second inning but took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the year despite seven strikeouts, while Jonah Philley picked up the win after going seven scoreless on the bump, striking out four and walking two for the Brigade. Kevin Doherty notched his first save by notching the last six outs of the game.
Jo-El Bennett led the way with two hits and two RBI for the home side, which finished with just five hits despite the three runs, while freshman *Kevin Martir (Maryland)* led the visitors with two base knocks for a North Adams squad that owned seven hits on the night.
Saratoga powered itself to a three-run lead with three hits in the bottom of the second. Dylan Butler got it started with a leadoff double before a walk put two runners on. Then, Bennett smacked a double into deep center to drive in two runs before Duncan Wendel rounded out the frame with an RBI base knock to make it a 3-0 Brigade after two frames.
That would be all the hosts would need, as each sides' pitching staff put up zeroes through the remaining seven innings en route to the final three-run decision.
The SteepleCats enjoy another off day tomorrow before hitting the road on Thursday, July 18, when North Adams makes its first trip of the year down to Danbury to take on the Westerners. First pitch from Rogers Park is set for 6:30 p.m.
