Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, RI - The Newport Gulls dropped an extra-inning Eastern Division contest against the Laconia Muskrats in 10 at Cardines Field, 2-1, on Tuesday night.

The Newport Gulls would strike first in the pitchers' duel with a lead-off home run from right fielder Ben Roberts. Roberts, a starting 9 All-Star selection for the Eastern Division team for this Sunday's All-Star game in Laconia, blasted a pitch high and deep over the right field wall to put the Gulls on the board first, 1-0.

Sean Hartnett, a reliable hard-throwing righty and go-to bullpen arm, made his first start for the Newport Gulls of the season, allowing only 1 hit through 7 innings of work. After retiring 15 Muskrats in a row, his streak was broken by infield errors allowing Laconia to threaten in the top of the seventh.

Laconia's Joey Bielek would advance to third with a close play at the bag from Newport catcher Ethan Ferreira to put the tying run 90 feet away with 1 out. Bielek would then cross the plate on a wild pitch from Hartnett through Ferreira to the back stop knotting things up at 1.

The contest would head into extra innings where Laconia would take the lead 2-1 in the top of the 10th. Eric Stone, combined with Hartnett, put on a 1 hit performance for Newport. However, that would be broken in the tenth, as Tyler Campbell would pick up a 1-out double to left to put the go-ahead run for the Muskrats at second. Carter White lifted Laconia over the Gulls for their first lead of the game with an RBI single to right-center field to make it 2-1 Muskrats.

That would be all the Muskrats would need as Ryan Tezak would pick up the save in the bottom of the tenth despite a Shea Donlin 2-out single to bring life back to the Gulls offense.

With the win, Laconia improves to 16-12 while Newport drops to 19-10. The Newport Gulls will be back in action Wednesday at home against the Sanford Mainers (12-17). James Mulry (3-1, 2.18 ERA) will take the hill for Newport.
