Newport Gulls News Release
SANFORD, MAINE - The Newport Gulls split a double header with the Sanford Mainers on Monday in division action at Goodall Park. Sanford would pick up game one in a low scoring game defeating Newport 2-1 in the afternoon, while Newport took game two, 8-1.
Brett Lilek got the start on the mound in the first of two 7 inning contests. Lilek had a rough first inning allowing 2 costly singles and walk. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Lilek threw a wild pitch toward the back stop allowing Mainer Cole Martin to score from third to make it 1-0 Sanford after 1.
Lilek's trouble would continue into the second inning as the Mainers would score once more to extend their lead to 2. With 2 on and 1 out, Sanford's Troy Black stepped up to the dish to score Anthony Papio from third on a sacrifice fly to center field. However, Lilek would get out of the jam with a man on second fanning Sam Balzano for the third and final out.
Newport would mount a comeback in the third Adrian English and Ty Moore would put the tying on second with lead off singles off of Mainers starter Evan Hill. English and Moore would subsequently steal second and third to put themselves in scoring position with one out for Trace Tam Sing. Tam Sing, who went 2-4 on the afternoon from the 2 slot, picked up the only run of the day for Newport with an RBI ground out to third to score English.
That would be all the Gulls would score in the first game as the rest of the contest proved to be a pitchers dual as the final 4 innings would remain scoreless on both sides.
The evening side of the double proved to be much different for Newport offensively as they went on to defeat Sanford 8-1 in 7 innings.
Tyler Ferguson picked up the win for Newport - his first as a Gull - in his third start of the season. Ferguson went the distance pitching 7 innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 run while walking 3 and fanning 5.
The bats were there for the Gulls in the second and seventh innings and Newport would end the night with 8 of its starting 9 reaching base with hits at least once in the contest.
