Bay Sox Walk off vs. Mystic

July 16, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The New Bedford Bay Sox had their first walk-off victory of the season Tuesday night at Paul Walsh Field beating the Mystic Schooners 2-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, New Bedford had runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out when Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) hit a game-winning line drive single to left-center. Andrew Dundon (Marshall) scored the winning run, just sliding under the tag of Garrett Kennedy.

In only his third game started this season, Alex Witkus (Fairfield) led the Bay Sox offensively going 3-for-4 and scoring one of their two runs.

Danny Tyson (Northwestern) had one of the strongest starts this year for New Bedford. Tyson didn't allow a run through six innings and stranded six Schooner runners. He left the game with a 1-0 Bay Sox lead.

The Schooners stranded 9 runners throughout the game and ran into three outs on the base paths.

Tyson induced three 4-6-3 double plays and got out of a no-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth.

The Bay Sox had a one run lead going into the top of the eighth when reliever Adam Fournier (Franklin Pierce) ran into some trouble. Fournier gave up a leadoff single and walked the next two batters he faced to load the bases. Jeremy Perron (Holy Cross) replaced Fournier and gave up a sacrifice fly to Byron Campbell (Maryland) to tie the game at one apiece.

Lane Richards (Notre Dame), who went 2-for-4, was moved to the second spot in the lineup and it paid off for Bay Sox manager Rick Miller in the bottom of the second.

Witkus led off the inning with an infield single that ended up sitting on the first base foul line. Witkus stole second and made it 1-0 when Schooners centerfielder Brandon Cipolla (Rollins College) misplayed a single off the bat of Richards.

With the win, the Bay Sox and Schooners are now tied in the season series 2-2

The Bay Sox move to 11-18 and hit the road tomorrow to take on Laconia.
