Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (19-25) defeated the Augusta GreenJackets (25-19) by a final score of 11-2 Monday night to conclude an 8 game homestand and salvage a split with Augusta.
The GreenJackets began the scoring again when Thomas Neal hit a 2-out double to drive in Francisco Peguero. Columbus answered back quickly when Greg Sexton hit a single just over shortstop Charlie Culberson's head to drive in Jackson Brennan.
The next batch of scoring would take place in the 5th, when an Andrew Davis sacrifice fly plated Culberson. Columbus answered in the bottom half however, when Shawn Williams hit a single that Shawn Jordan misplayed to allow Stephen Vogt to score and allow Jackson Brennan to get to 3rd and Williams to get to 2nd. That would prove costly, as Maiko Loyola picked them both up with a run-scoring single.
Columbus than put it to Augusta in the 8th, in a strikingly similar inning to what had happened to Columbus the day before. The first 8 batters of the 8th inning reached base as Columbus scored 7 runs in the inning to put the game out of reach. The highlights of the inning included Seth Dhaenens roping a 2 run single between the shortstop and third basemen and Omar Luna driving him in with a double down the right field line.
Columbus was led offensively by Maiko Loyola, who went 2-4 with 3 runs batted in. Jackson Brennan, in his 2nd game starting, reached base all 5 times drawing 3 walks and going 2-2 with 2 runs scored. Greg Sexton and Stephen Vogt also had 2 hits. A couple of Catfish also broke out of slumps, as Seth Dhaenens broke out of an 0-21 slump when starting at second base to hit a 2-run single and Omar Luna got his 1st hit of the homestand to drive in Dhaenens. Joshua Johnson recorded his 2nd win of the year and first since April 11th by throwing 5 innings and allowed only 4 hits and 2 earned runs. Jesse Darcy recorded his first career save by throwing 4 shutout innings and allowed only 1 hit.
Augusta was led by Francisco Peguero, who is sad to see the GreenJackets leave. Peguero went 3-4 with a run tonight making him 9-19 for the series. T.J. Brewer took his 3rd loss of the season after throwing 5 innings and allowing 4 runs, though only 3 were earned.
The Catfish now begin an 8-game roadtrip to Hickory and Asheville with the first game beginning at 6:30 with the scheduled pitching match-up being the 2008 debut of Woods Fines against Rafael De Los Santos
The Catfish are the Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
