Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers, led by a phenomenal outing by starting pitcher Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State), defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 2-0, at Recreation Field on Wednesday night.
Vermont pitching has not allowed a run in its last 34 and one-third innings.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 21-13 on the summer. North Adams falls to 17-19.
The lone two runs of the ballgame came on one swing, when catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) crushed a two-run homerun to left-center field in the fourth inning. Earlier in the frame, first baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) laced a double to left field, serving as the base runner to Smith's blast. The hit was Dudek's second of a three-for-three night.
That was all the scoring the Mountaineers' pitching staff needed, as Brown and reliever Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) combined to shutout the North Adams offense en route to helping Vermont to its sixth consecutive victory.
Brown dealt six and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on just four hits and one walk. He tallied a season-high seven strikeouts and moved to 4-1 with the win.
Rodliff pitched the final two and one-third innings, giving up no runs, hits or walks. He struck out three and earned his third save of the season.
North Adams starter Josh Garran (Old Tappan, N.J. / Pace) hurled six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits and three walks. He struck out two. Garran took his first loss of the summer, falling to 5-1.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday night, when the squad takes on the Ocean State Waves in Game 1 of a four-night Southern Division road swing. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
