Gulls Roll Past Mainers 13-6 on Military Appreciation Night

NEWPORT, R.I. - After an unexpected off-day Tuesday, the Newport Gulls came into Wednesday's home game fired up to make up for the lost opportunity. The Gulls (22-11) throttled the Sanford Mainers 13-6 at Cardines Field.
It is the third straight home game in which Newport has scored 12 runs or more.
Once again, Newport jumped out to an early lead, putting up crooked numbers for five straight innings, seizing a massive lead on the back of Max Beermann. The big first baseman from Villanova continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the order, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Manager Mike Coombs said the production from the bottom of the order has greatly benefitted the offense, especially over the last three home games.
"The bottom of the order has been picking us up good," Coombs said. "And that's something you always want to see."
Michael Mertz came out of the gates strong, but began to fade around the middle innings, allowing two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings. This is the first start of the summer in which Mertz allowed more than three runs.
The pitching staff has struggled at times recently, something that Coombs is paying attention to.
"The pitching wasn't overly outstanding tonight, but the offense picked them up," Coombs said. "Mertz was alright, Hunter Schryver threw the ball well and Brendan Spagnuolo wasn't overly impressive, but it is what it is."
The staff was able to give the Gulls enough of a cushion that Newport could cruise to a victory.
The Gulls have Thursday off and will host the Vermont Mountaineers Friday at Cardines Field. Rob Masse and Matthew Tonis will be on the call for the game on the NECBL Broadcast Network. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. following the Newport Gulls Pregame Show beginning at 6:05 p.m.
