Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan (April 16th) - With the second National Signing Period of the season beginning today in the college hockey circuit, the Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud to announce that Defenseman Carson Gatt has officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Spartans of Michigan State University out of the Big Ten Conference beginning in the 2014-15 season.
Gatt, the Farmington Hills, Michigan native, played this past season for the Lumberjacks registering 13 points (5 goals and 8 assists) in 38 games played after being selected by Muskegon in the 2013 USHL Phase Two Draft during the sixth round (83rd overall).
"What got me interested in ultimately playing for the Spartans was the brand of hockey that Coach (Tom) Anastos instills in his players and the fact that it is a great academic institution. Coach (Trevor) Nill gave me great insight that if I play my cards right and do what I'm supposed to do both on and off the ice while at East Lansing, then I will be set for life. All-around, Michigan State is the right fit for me," shared Gatt. "My one year in Muskegon was a life-changing experience on my junior career as the USHL provided you with an opportunity to go up against the best talent in the United States. Also, I couldn't have asked for a better situation being drafted by a USHL team in my home state as I remained close to home, and it didn't take long for me to get comfortable in my surroundings."
Prior to being drafted into the USHL, Gatt spent three seasons from 2010-13 playing for the Shamrocks of Detroit Catholic Central High School totaling 43 points (9 goals and 34 assists) in 82 games played. Gatt will join notable Lumberjacks alums in Travis Walsh, Matt DeBlouw, Joe Cox, Connor Wood, and Matt Berry on next year's roster for Michigan State.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud members of the United States Hockey League, the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league and the leading producer of NCAA players and National Hockey League draft picks in the United States. The Lumberjacks' organization prides itself on developing not just premier hockey talent, but also exceptional young men outside the arena of sports.
