Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan (April 16th) - In preparation for the USHL Phase One and Phase Two Drafts coming up in early May, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced that the organization has signed Defenseman Mitch Eliot to a tender and will begin his USHL career beginning in the 2014-15 season. Under the terms of the tender, the signing of Eliot will take the place of Muskegon's first round pick in the USHL Phase One Draft, and the blueliner is required to play a minimum of 50 percent of the Lumberjacks' games next season.
Eliot, the Grosse Pointe, Michigan native, spent the past three seasons from 2011-14 with the Honeybaked program based out of the Detroit area totaling 29 points (9 goals and 20 assists) in 64 games played and is committed to play collegiately for the Spartans of Michigan State University out of the Big Ten Conference following his junior career.
"I would like to personally thank the Muskegon Lumberjacks organization for having the faith in my hockey abilities to eventually offer me a tender and giving me the opportunity to play in the USHL as it has always been a dream of mine to play in the league," shared Eliot. "I felt that Muskegon was the best opportunity for my development given the NHL experience of both Mr. (John) Vanbiesbrouck and Coach (Todd) Krygier. It's also a bonus to continue my junior hockey career in my home state, and I knew that playing for the Lumberjacks was the right fit for me in the end."
In addition, Mitch is the son of current Fox Sports Detroit analyst for the Detroit Red Wings and former National Hockey League goaltender Darren Eliot, who appeared in 89 career NHL games from 1984-89 with the Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, and Buffalo Sabres, respectively.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud members of the United States Hockey League, the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league and the leading producer of NCAA players and National Hockey League draft picks in the United States. The Lumberjacks' organization prides itself on developing not just premier hockey talent, but also exceptional young men outside the arena of sports.
