Carolina Mudcats News Release
Montgomery, AL --- Scott Carroll pitched six innings of one-run baseball, leading Carolina to its third win in four games over the Montgomery Biscuits 5-1 at Riverwalk Stadium on Sunday night.
Carroll (W, 3-5) permitted his only run in the sixth inning, then snagged a hard grounder on the hill with the bases loaded to end his outing. Joe Krebs and Federico Baez combined to throw the final three innings as the Mudcats (16-14) claimed the series with the Biscuits (16-14) with Monday night's game remaining.
Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with Felix Perez scoring from third as the Biscuits failed to turn a double play grounder off of Mike Costanzo's bat. Shortstop Chris DeLaCruz dropped the ball as he started to make the relay throw to first base as the Mudcats edged ahead 1-0. The Mudcats' second run scored when Costanzo came home on a throwing error by third baseman Henry Wrigley.
Leading 3-1 in the seventh, league-leading hitter Dave Sappelt lofted a two-run single into right-center for a 5-1 lead. Sappelt finished 2-4 with three RBI, raising his top average to .352.
Felix Perez delivered his sixth multi-hit game in his 10 starts at Double-A, finishing 3-4 with a double on the game's opening pitch. Luis Terrero reached base four times, while Costanzo had two hits.
Carolina closes the series on Monday night with Tom Cochran (7-4) matching against Heath Rollins (3-0) at 8:05 PM ET.
