Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC- The Carolina Mudcats had to rally twice to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 11-6 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium to win their second consecutive game over the Lookouts.
Chattanooga (13-16) scored first in the fourth inning with a pair of runs off Mudcat starter Alexander Smit who gave up the two runs via an RBI single from Trayvon Robinson and later in the inning, Robinson was caught in a run down between third and the plate, and after a throw home, Robinson slid in ahead of the Yonder Alonso tag and the Lookouts took a 2-0 lead.
Carolina (10-19) put their first run on the board in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Sean Henry to drive home Dennis Phipps to cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Mudcats then took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run from Yonder Alonso.
The Mudcat lead grew to three runs after the seventh inning when they plated a pair. Kris Negron led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on Yonder Alonso's third RBI of the game. Alonso then scored later in the frame on a RBI double from Sean Henry.
Chattanooga was not done scoring however and they re-gained the lead in the top of the eighth off Carolina relief pitcher Joe Krebs who surrendered three runs in his inning plus of work. After a pair of walks to begin the frame which led to a RBI double from Corey Smith which was followed by RBI base hits from Eddy Perez and Jamie Pedroza and heading to the last of the eighth, the Mudcats and Lookouts were tied at five.
However, Carolina rallied with a season high six runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Lookouts aided the cause with three errors in the inning and four of the six runs coming on a fly ball to left which was dropped by the Corey Smith in left field which allowed the loaded bases to clear and as Smith came up firing his throw to third hit Sean Henry and trickled away allowing Henry to score and give the Mudcats and 11-5 lead.
Jordan Smith came on to pitch the ninth and recorded the final three outs and did yield a solo home run to Corey Smith to cap the scoring.
The Mudcats conclude their home stand tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 when Carolina will send Travis Webb to the hill and Chattanooga counters with Jesus Castillo.
