Mobile BayBears News Release

KODAK, Tenn. - Down 4-1 with two outs in the eighth inning, the BayBears staged a dramatic comeback, but their lead was brief before the Tennessee Smokies tied the score in the bottom of the eighth ahead of winning the contest, 6-5 in 10 innings on Saturday night at Smokies Park.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Ricardo Sosa hit a bouncer to third that Russ Canzler booted into left field which brought home Evan Frey and Ollie Linton to pull the BayBears (15-15) within one. Two pitches later, Taylor Harbin lined a ball to the right-center field gap which kicked home Ed Easley and Sosa, putting the visitors on top.

When all the dramatics subsided, Roque Mercedes took the mound in the bottom of the eighth and allowed Nate Samson to reach on a lead-off single. Samson was bunted to second by Tony Campana and scored the tying tally on a two-out knock by Blake Lalli.

Jake Wald started the top of the ninth inning with a walk against Ryan Buchter (1-0) while Linton reached on a bunt single. With one out, Buchter fired a wild pitch into the dirt that moved away from catcher Robinson Chirinos. Chirinos never found the ball while Wald attempted to score all the way from second. Finally, Buchter located the wild deliver and threw Wald out at the plate to preserve the tie.

Bryan Henry (2-2) entered the contest in the bottom of the 10th but surrendered a lead-off single to Samson. After another Campana sac bunt, Samson streaked to the plate with the winning run after a single to right-center off the bat of Ty Wright.

The BayBears led initially in the contest when Easley knocked home Collin Cowgill in the first with a two-out single off starter Tennessee (20-10) starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx. Bibens-Dirkx allowed just that one run in six innings while striking out six.

Barry Enright started for the BayBears and coughed up four runs in 5.1 innings including home runs to Marwin Gonzalez in the third and Russ Canzler in the sixth which put the Smokies up by three.

The BayBears continue finish their 10-game road trip to Pringles Park on Monday night as they start a five-game series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx at 7:05. They return home to battle the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday, May 15 at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
