Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS- In the shortest game in the history of the Mississippi Braves, Scott Diamond worked quickly and completely shut down the Birmingham Barons. The left hander struck out 11 batters and pitched 8 shutout innings to earn his first win of the season. The win gives the Braves the series as they have won 3 of 4 vs. Birmingham.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 3rd inning when the MBraves received singles from Conception Rodriguez and Travis Jones to lead off the inning. Randy Gress then reached on a fielders choice and the Braves were left with runners at first and third with one out. Leadoff hitter, Alex Romero, then delivered a sac fly to left field to score Rodriguez from third and that gave Scott Diamond all the support he would need.

For Diamond, it was his 6th start of the season and was 0-3 entering the game. In earning the win, he struck out 11 batters and retired the last 10 batters he faced. Diamond faced 26 batters and gave up just three hits; one double and two singles. The Barons were held without a hit from the 6th inning on. Brett Butts came on for the 8th and got the Barons in order as the last 13 batters of the game went down in order for Birmingham.

The Braves are now 15-14 with the win and the Barons fell to 7-21. The final game of the series is tomorrow afternoon at 2:05. The Braves look to finish off the series on a three game win streak as they send RHP Erik Cordier (1-2; 4.05) to the hill. The Barons will use RHP Charlie Shirek (1-0; 0.84), who ranks #1 in the league in ERA.
