Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Zach Cozart's 14th inning, two-out single ended the eighth longest game in franchise history as Carolina outlasted Chattanooga 3-2 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
Cozart hit a 3-2 pitch from Jacobo Meque (L, 1-4) into left field to score Chris Denove from third to end a game that saw no scoring from the eighth inning until the game-winning hit.
Carolina (9-14) tied the Lookouts (8-15) on Denove's two-run homer against Travis Chick in the last of the seventh. It was Denove's first home run since June 13, 2006 in the Midwest League. The Lookouts took a 2-0 advantage in the fifth inning on a two-run shot by Russell Mitchell against starter Justin Mallett.
Mallett worked six innings in his second Carolina start, permitting seven hits and just those two runs. Chattanooga's starter Josh Lindblom, Los Angeles' 2nd-round pick last year from Purdue, pitched five shutout innings.
Camilo Vazquez (W, 1-0) notched the win with two scoreless innings.
The Mudcats send James Avery (1-2, 3.52) to the hill Sunday at 2:00 PM against Scott Elbert (0-0, 3.38).
