Carolina win over Mobile

Zebulon, NC --- Jake Kahaulelio hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to stake Carolina a 5-2 lead, and the Mudcats bullpen threw three scoreless innings behind starter Matt Klinker's six frames as Carolina defeated the Mobile BayBears 6-4 at Five County Stadium before 5,886 fans on Friday night.

With the game tied 2-2, Kahaulelio hit his first home run since July 23rd, turning around a 2-1 fastball from Ryan Cook (L, 0-1) to push Carolina (24-30) ahead for the second time in the game. Cook allowed five runs (four earned) in his Double-A debut.

Mobile (30-23) hit a pair of two-run blasts against Klinker (W, 7-6), who worked six innings to secure his second straight victory. Sean Coughlin and Collin Cowgill took Klinker out, but Carolina left fielder Sean Henry kept the Mudcats in the lead in the fifth with a diving catch of a flyball by Taylor Harbin to end the fifth with runners at second and third.

After Kris Negron was robbed when first baseman Bryan Byrne stole away a liner destined for right field in the thrid ining, he extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a bunt single in the fifth, his only hit of the game. Negron walked twice, and now has the second longest hitting streak in the Southern League this season, and two shy of Carolina's club record of 20.

Lee Tabor relieved Klinker in the seventh and fanned Coughlin with runners at second and third and one out, fanned Coughlin to maintain the lead. Ryan Wheeler flew out to Denis Phipps in right field to end the inning.

Donnie Joseph worked a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout while making his first appearance at Double-A. Federico Baez (S, 5) struck out Coughlin with runners at second and third on a 3-2 changeup in the ninth to preserve the 6-4 victory.

Carolina boosted the lead to 6-4 in the eighth when Brandon Yarbrough drove a two-out single to centerfield scoring Mike Costanzo.

The Mudcats swiped five bases in six attempts against the Mobile battery.

The series continues Saturday night with Scott Carroll (3-8, 3.75) opposing Mobile's Josh Collmenter (6-2, 1.59) at 6:15 PM ET.
