Mobile BayBears News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Right-hander Ryan Cook fell victim to the long ball in his Double-A debut as a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth busted a 2-2 and lifted the Carolina Mudcats to a 6-4 victory over the BayBears on Friday night at Five County Stadium.
Cook (0-1) allowed a pair in the bottom of the first as the Mudcats (54-69, 24-30) scored first for the third consecutive ballgame. Kris Negron walked and took third on a single by Felix Perez. When Perez stole second base, Sean Coughlin fired the ball into center field, allowing Negron to score. Perez came home on a groundout by Sean Henry.
Matt Klinker (7-6) held up the Carolina lead until the fourth when Bryan Byrne singled in front of a two-run blast by Coughlin to even the score. In the next half-inning, the Mudcats went back on top with a two-out, three-run jack by Jake Kahaulelio.
Cook had only given up three home runs during his 20 starts at Single-A Visalia. He ended up working six frames in his debut with the BayBears (66-55, 30-23) while surrendering six hits and four earned runs. He walked two and fanned a pair.
In the fifth, the BayBears cut the Carolina lead to one with Evan Frey singling in front of a two-run bomb by Collin Cowgill. Later in the frame, the BayBears had two men in scoring position when Taylor Harbin lined a ball to left that Henry made a diving catch on to preserve the lead.
The BayBears would put two more in scoring position in the seventh and ninth innings while coming up empty each time against Lee Tabor and Federico Baez (S, 5). Baez punched out Coughlin with a 3-2 offspeed pitch to end the contest.
The BayBears battle the Mudcats to continue their nine-game road trip on Saturday night at 5:15. They return to Hank Aaron Stadium to host the Huntsville Stars on Thursday, August 26, at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
