FORT WORTH, Texas - Dylan Carlson of the Springfield Cardinals and Darren McCaughan of the Arkansas Travelers have been named the Texas League's Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively, Tim Purpura, the league's president, announced Tuesday. The awards were voted on by the league's coaches, staff and media.

Carlson ranks among the Texas League's top 10 in 13 statistical categories, including topping the circuit in home runs (21), total bases (216) and slugging percentage (.518). He also is second in both runs scored (81) and OPS (.882). Additionally, the 20-year-old from Elk Grove, Calif., is among the leaders in on-base percentage (5th, .364), walks (6th, 52), hits (8th, 117), doubles (8th, 24), triples (8th, 6), batting average (9th, .281), RBIs (9th, 59) and stolen bases (10th, 18).

A switch hitter, Carlson played in the Texas League All-Star Game and participated in the Home Run Derby. He represented the Cardinals in the 2019 All-Star Futures Game in June, and earned a promotion to Triple-A Memphis earlier this month.

Carlson was drafted by St. Louis in the first round (33rd overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft. He is currently the organization's No. 2 prospect and MiLB's 50th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He is the first Springfield player to be named Player of the Year since Oscar Taveras in 2012.

McCaughan, a 6-1, 195-pound right-hander, posted a 7-5 record with a 2.86 ERA in 17 starts prior to being promoted to Triple-A Tacoma in July. Across 102.2 innings, he struck out 89 batters against just 10 walks and had a WHIP of 1.10.

McCaughan was named a Texas League All-Star and helped the Travelers win the first-half North Division title with a 43- 25 record. The 23-year-old was the TL Pitcher of the Week following the season's opening week after he did not allow a run over 12 innings of work covering two starts.

The native of Downey, Calif., was drafted in the 12th round by the Mariners in the 2017 MLB Draft after attending Long Beach State. He is Arkansas' third TL Pitcher of the Year recipient over the last nine years (Nate Smith-2015 and Matt Shoemaker-2011), more than any other organization over that time.

The Texas League's awards announcements will continue with the Postseason All-Star Team on Wednesday followed by the Manager of the Year and Coach of the Year awards on Thursday. Next Tuesday, the Sports Turf Manager of the Year, Best Visiting Team Hotel, Best Visiting Clubhouse, Best Umpire Hotel and Best Umpire Locker Room awards will be revealed.
