Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Rockies officially announced this morning that outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox today, Wednesday, August 3 as the Sky Sox take on the Nashville Sounds in a 7:05 PM start at Security Service Field. The young slugger is schedule to play with the Sky Sox through Friday, August 5th.
Gonzalez, 25, has been on the disabled list since July 22 with a strained right wrist and will be making his first appearance in a game since being placed on the disabled list. Before the injury, Gonzalez was hitting .289 (99-for-342) with 15 home runs, 56 RBI and 63 runs scored in 92 games with the Rockies.
This will be Gonzalez's second time in a Sky Sox uniform as he previous played for Colorado Springs in 2009 after the Rockies acquired him from Oakland in the Matt Holliday trade. That season, he started the year with the Sky Sox and in 48 games, hit .339 (65-for-192) with 10 home runs, 43 runs scored and 59 RBI before he was called up to the Rockies. At the time of his call up, the 59 RBI were the most in all of professional baseball.
After his call up, Gonzalez went on to establish himself with the Rockies and in 2010 turned in one of the greatest seasons in Rockies history. That season he hit .336 (197-for-587) to win the National League batting title to go along with 34 home runs, 111 runs scored and 117 RBI. Following the season, he finished third in the National League MVP voting and was awarded his first career Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award and Rawlings Gold Glove Award. In addition, he was voted by his fellow players as the 2010 National League Most Outstanding Player and Major League Player of the Year, also known as the Players Choice Award.
The Sky Sox are honoring Gonzalez's amazing 2010 campaign on Saturday, August 6 with a special giveaway of a limited edition Silver Slugger and Gold Glove figurine. The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday will receive this one-of-a-kind figurine. Gates open up at 6:00 PM for the 7:05 PM start.
