Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Edwin Carl pitched another masterpiece in Ottawa on Saturday night.
The Goldeyes starter pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out eight, as he led the Goldeyes to a 5-0 win over the Ottawa Champions.
With the win, the Fish won their third straight game, locked up this three-game series with Ottawa, improved to 4-2 on this 10-game road trip through the Can-Am League, improved to 40-45 on the season and remained no worse than six games back of Wild Card-leading Laredo (depending on the late score between Laredo and Wichita) with 15 games remaining in the schedule.
"Carl has been pretty good for us since we got him," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. "He had a pretty good fastball tonight and was able to throw that breaking ball when he had to.
"The way Carl was pitching I kind of thought that after Reggie (Abercrombie) hit the home run that one run that that was all we'd need. Carl was really good tonight and that home plate umpire was squeezing him. It probably cost him 20 pitches tonight. He probably should have had a complete game, but we took him out after he passed the 100-pitch mark."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Reggie Abercrombie led off with a solo homer. The Goldeyes added two runs in the sixth when Abercrombie singled with one out and Casey Haerther walked. Abercrombie was thrown out trying to steal but that's when Josh Mazzola tripled to score Haerther. Tillman Pugh then singled to score Mazzola and make the score 3-0.
The Goldeyes added two more in the eighth as Abercrombie led off with a single, advanced to third on a ground out and scored when Pugh singled with two out. Luis Alen then singled and Pugh scored all the way from first to give Winnipeg a 5-0 lead.
The Goldeyes finished with five runs on 14 hits, while Ottawa had no runs on three hits. Abercrombie led the way for the Goldeyes going four-for-five with his fifth homer of the season, two runs scored and an RBI. Pugh went two-for-four with a run scored and two driven in. Alen was three-for-four with an RBI. The Goldeyes have scored 11 runs in the first two games of this three-game series, 10 have come on two-out hits.
Carl (3-0, 2.02 ERA) earned the victory while Ottawa starter and former big league starter (San Diego Padres 2012), Andrew Werner (2-3, 4.19), suffered the loss. Brendan Lafferty, who made his 50th appearance in relief this season, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. It's the third straight season in which Lafferty has made at least 50 appearances.
The Goldeyes and Champions will play the third and final game of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. CDT at RCGT Stadium in Ottawa. Right-hander Tony Smith (3-3, 4.95 ERA), who will pitch on just three days rest, will take to the bump for Winnipeg, while Laetten Galbraith (3-4, 3.28 ERA) will start for Ottawa. The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.
The Goldeyes return home from this 10-game road trip until Friday, Aug. 28, when the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks invade Shaw Park. Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
