Cards Fall in Ninth Again
The Arkansas Travelers used a ninth-inning rally for a second straight game, as they downed the Springfield Cardinals by a final score of 4-3, on Wednesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.
Michael Collins' two-run single to center field gave the Travs their second consecutive walk-off win over the Cards, who have now dropped six straight games on the road trip.
Luke Gregerson, who let a two-run advantage get away on Tuesday night, couldn't hold a one-run lead on Wednesday. Jordan Czarniecki and Nate Sutton opened the inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners at first and third and no outs in a one-run game. Adam Greenberg then grounded a pitch back to Gregerson. Czarniecki got tagged out by Springfield catcher Brandon Yarbrough, but stayed alive long enough to allow the runners to advance to second and third. Gregerson (0-2) intentionally walked Hainley Statia to get to Collins, who delivered with the game-winning hit to center field.
The Cards scored three runs in the second inning, their only runs of the night against starter Bobby Mosebach. Steven Hill, who had four hits on the night, opened the frame with his first of two doubles. After a single by Brandon Yarbrough, Hill scored from third on Jose Martinez's sac fly, making it 1-0. Mark Shorey followed with an RBI double, plating Yarbrough for a 2-0 lead. Isa Garcia would cap the inning with an RBI single to left-center, scoring Shorey to make it 3-0.
Mosebach (4-3) eventually settled down, working all nine innings and picking up the complete-game win, his second of the year.
Cards' starter Clayton Mortensen had a solid outing, but got a no-decision. He allowed two runs, but just one earned. The right-hander allowed just three hits over seven innings.
Springfield will look to avoid the sweep on Thursday night, sending Tyler Herron (0-1) to the hill against Arkansas' Dan Denham (2-4). Game time in the series-finale on Thursday will be 7:10pm.
