Cards lose, fan wins

New Jersey Cardinals News Release


The Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 5-1 tonight at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to avoid a three game sweep. The loss dropped the Cardinals a game under .500 at 19-20, while the Ironbirds improved to 13-25. Starter Garret Olson earned his first victory of the season and designated hitter Mark Fleisher hit a homerun and scored 2 runs for the Ironbirds as they beat the Cardinals for the first time this season. Cards starter Kyle Sadlowski took the loss to fall to 0-1.

The Ironbirds pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth to take the early lead. Fleisher singled to lead off the inning and left fielder Zachary Davis followed with a RBI triple to right. Robert Marconi then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate the second run of the inning.

The Cardinals answered right back in their half of the fourth to cut the lead in half. Center fielder Sean Danielson singled and stole second and third before Casey Rowletts RBI ground out scored the Cardinalsfirst run.

Fleisher put the Ironbirds back on top by two with his third homer of the season and second of the series. Aberdeen tacked on two more insurance runs in the 8th, when Francisco Guerrero laced an RBI single to center and Nolan Reimold walked with the bases loaded.

Olson limited the Cards to three hits over five innings and relievers Henry Lozado and Reid Hamblet worked 2 scoreless innings each as the Ironbirds won for first time in sixth chances against the Cardinals.

But the big winner tonight was Anthony Chiodo, who won the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS Field of Dreams Challengewhen his key started the 2005 Chrysler PT cruiser convertible. After 6 nights of challenges and contests, Anthony outlasted 64 other hopefuls and drove home in his brand new car, courtesy of Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS.

The Cardinals return to action Monday when they begin a six-game road trip against the Tri-City Valley Cats (Houston Astros). After a three game set with the Valley Cats, the Cardinals travel to Jamestown for a weekend series with the Jammers (Florida Marlins).
