Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Wichita Wranglers rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 6-2, coming back to defeat the Springfield Cardinals by a final of 7-6 on Friday night at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita. The Cards missed out on an opportunity to move into a first place tie, dropping the first game of the five-game series.
Springfield took an early 5-0 lead in the second inning against Wichita starter Derrin Ebert. Cody Haerther's two-run double made it 2-0 in the second. With two outs in the second, Shaun Boyd singled home a run to make it 3-0. On the play, Wichita left fielder Mel Stocker let the ball get behind him, allowing Kevin Estrada to follow Cody Haerther to the plate, making it 4-0. Travis Hanson followed with an RBI double, scoring Boyd to make it 5-0.
Cards starter Chris Lambert struggled with his control throughout five innings of work. Lambert issued six walks in five innings of work, allowing just three hits. Wichita scored two with two outs in the second, as Mel Stocker's two-run single made it 5-2.
The Cards got a run back in the third, making it 6-2 as Robinson Cancel scored from third on Papo Bolivar's RBI groundout. Springfield would chase Ebert in the fourth, but Steven Bray would come out of the bullpen to keep the Cards lead at four runs. Bray walked Juan Diaz to load the bases in the fourth, but would get Cancel to fly out to left, ending the threat.
The Wranglers got a run in the fourth as Matt Tupman tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by Wilkin Ruan, making it 6-3. Lambert walked the lead-off man in the sixth and was finally chased. Oscar Alvarez came on and allowed the Wranglers to tie the game at 6-6. Mitch Maier doubled home two runs, making it 6-5. Donnie Murphy's RBI single tied the game at 6-6.
The Wranglers finally took the lead in the eighth against new Cards right-hander Chris Mears (0-1). Mears allowed Stocker to reach with a lead-off single. After a sac bunt and an intentional walk put runners at first and second with one out, Donnie Murphy singled to load the bases. Mike Aviles hit a sac fly to left, scoring Stocker from third base with the winning run.
The Cards went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning against Thad Markray. Markray (4-3)pitched two perfect innings for the win. The Cardinals final hit of the night was a fourth-inning single by Travis Hanson. Springfield had just one base runner in the final 5.1 innings, as Juan Diaz reached on a seventh inning error by Donnie Murphy.
