Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) - Early home runs by Charlton Jimerson and Dax Norris and the pitching of Jason Hirsh carried the Hooks to a 4-3 win Friday night over Midland at Whataburger Field. The Hooks evened their second-half record to 4-4, while the RockHounds slipped to 4-3.
Jimerson put the game's first run on the board in the second, blasting a 3-2 pitch far beyond the wall in left for his fifth homer of the year and a 1-0 Corpus Christi lead. In the fourth inning, a double by Mark Saccomanno and a walk by Jimerson put runners at first and second with nobody out. John Fagan's ground ball out to first moved the runners and brought Norris to the plate. Norris, who last went deep June 11th at San Antonio, clubbed one over the wall in left to give the Hooks a 4-0 cushion. The circuit shot was the eighth this season for Norris, tying him with Carlos Rodriguez for the team lead.
Midland notched a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andre Ethier. The RockHounds would not score again until the ninth, when they managed to plate two off reliever Jailen Peguero. The game ended, though, when Jamie Merchant, the third pitcher of the inning for the Hooks, got Brian Stavisky to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded.
Hirsh (6-6) earned the win with seven strong innings on the hill. He allowed just one run on four hits and four walks while striking out a season-high 10 batters. That equals the previous high for most strikeouts in a game by a Hooks' pitcher, set back on May 8th by Fernando Nieve.
Merchant, pitching for just the third time since his arrival from Salem of the Carolina League, recorded his first save by inducing the double play grounder. Also helping out in the dicey ninth inning was lefty reliever Blake Allen, whose strikeout of clean-up hitter Jason Perry provided the first out of the frame with the bases loaded.
Game two of the series takes place Saturday evening at 7:05. RHP Scott MacRae (2-2, 2.70) will pitch for the Hooks, while Midland will go with RHP Jason Windsor (1-1, 2.41).
