Cards Hold Off Drillers
August 22, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
There was no ninth inning comeback for the Tulsa Drillers Wednesday, just a night of missed opportunities. The Drillers had 13 hits and collected 3 walks but stranded 11 runners on base. The result was a 4-3 loss to the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field.
There was some good news for the Drillers. Wichita scored three times in the eighth inning to tie Arkansas, then Kila Kaaihue hit a game-winning homer in the tenth to give the Wranglers a 6-5 win. The Drillers remain only two games behind the first-place Travelers in the North Division standings with 13 games remaining in the regular season.
Tulsa missed a chance to take a quick lead off Todd Wellemeyer who was making an injury rehabilitation assignment from the St. Louis Cardinals. Jonathan Herrera drew a one-out walk from Wellemeyer in the top of the first inning, then stole second base. Christian Colonel followed with a base hit to right, but Herrera was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Reid Gorecki.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Colby Rasmus led off with a base hit and came home on Amaury Cazana's fifth home run of the year.
Wellemeyer again ran into trouble in the second inning when an error and a pair of singles loaded the bases with no outs. Scheduled starting pitcher Eric Haberer came on for Wellemeyer and promptly surrendered a two-run single to Tommy Duenas that tied the game at 2-2. Haberer eventually escaped the inning thanks to a double play grounder off the bat of pitcher Jon Asahina.
Rasmus put the Cards back in front with his Texas League-leading 25th home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. Springfield made it 4-2 later in the inning as Mark Hamilton doubled and scored on a base hit by Gorecki.
Tulsa cut the margin to one run in the sixth inning when Duenas belted his sixth home run of the year.
The Drillers put runners on base in each of the final three innings but could not produce the game-tying run. They had won their previous two games with come-from-behind ninth inning rallies.
The two teams will play game three of their four-game series Thursday night in Springfield. Samuel Deduno (5-5, 5.57 ERA) will pitch for the Drillers against Cory Rauschenberger (8-8, 5.06 ERA). Game time will be 7:10PM.
