Cards Hammer Drillers

Tulsa Drillers News Release

The beautiful, spring-like weather for the first time this season at a home game was about the only positive for the Tulsa Drillers Thursday night. The Drillers enjoyed the game-time temperature of 76 degrees, but little else. The Springfield Cardinals, who entered Thursday's game with a 2-7 record, out-hit the Drillers 13-9 and took advantage of four Tulsa errors to gain a 13-1 win in the opening game of a four-game series at Drillers Stadium.

The game deteriorated quickly for Tulsa after starting pitcher Ryan Mattheus set the Cardinals down in order in the first inning. Springfield began the game's scoring with a 2-run second inning, then blew the game open with a pair of 4-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Centerfielder Colby Rasmus led the Springfield attack with three hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in. He was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Four other Cardinals finished with two hits each.

Tulsa's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chris Frey walked and scored on a base hit by Joe Gaetti.

Gaetti was one of three Drillers' players to get two hits in the game. Duke Sardinha finished 2-3 and Tim Olson was 2-4.

Mattheus (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He surrendered ten hits and six runs in four innings of work. Zack Parker followed Mattheus to the mound, allowing four runs (3 ER) on one hit and four walks in 1/3 of an inning.

Matt Daley pitched 2 2/3 hitless and scoreless relief innings. Jentry Beckstead gave up the final three runs.

Springfield starter Eric Haberer (1-0) gained the win, surrendering one run over the game's first five innings. Brian Stitt and Zack Zuercher each threw two scoreless innings in relief of Haberer.

There was a scary moment in the bottom of the third inning. Tulsa shortstop Jonathan Herrera, who has seven straight hits, was hit in the head with a pitch by Haberer. Herrera was removed from the game as a precautionary measure. His status will likely be day-to-day.

The series will continue Friday night at Drillers Stadium. Ching-Lung Lo (0-1, 8.10 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Mitchell Boggs (0-2, 7.56 ERA) of Springfield. First pitch is slated for 7:05PM.
