May 18, 2008 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals dropped their tenth straight game on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Tulsa Drillers by a final score of 9-5 at Hammons Field.
Jeff Kindel capped a five-run seventh inning for Tulsa, with a three-run double, blowing open a close pitcher's duel.
Neither team could get much going offensively as both starters threw the ball well. Springfield right-hander Jess Todd, making his Hammons Field debut and only his third start of the year, gave up a two-out RBI single to Chris Nelson, as the Drillers finally took a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
Allen Craig responded with a solo shot, the fourth consecutive game in which he's homered, tying the score at 1-1 against Tulsa starter Ching-Lung Lo in the bottom of the fifth.
The Drillers took the lead for good in the sixth, as Tony Blanco's solo shot to center field made it a 2-1 game.
Tulsa got five more in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a couple of bad bounces and a Springfield error. Up 4-1, Jeff Kindel ripped a three-run double off of Marco Gonzalez, taking a 7-1 lead.
Cards' reliever Bob Zimmermann gave up two in the ninth on a Kindel two-run single, putting Tulsa up 9-1.
Springfield showed some heart, rallying for four in the ninth with two outs. Tyler Greene and Allen Craig each had two-run singles, making it a 9-5 game. With the tying run in the on-deck circle though, Jonathan George got Brandon Yarbrough to ground out to second, ending the Springfield come-back attempt.
Lo (2-6) earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings. Todd (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Todd struck out seven and walked only one.
Springfield (17-26) will send Clayton Mortensen (1-3) to the mound on Monday night in the series-finale. Tulsa will counter with Xavier Cedeno (3-3). Game time on Monday night from Hammons Field is 7:10pm.
