Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals suffered a heart-breaking loss on Thursday night, as the Wichita Wranglers scored seven times in the bottom of the eighth inning, defeating the Cards by a score of 8-4 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Mitch Maier's two-run single broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Wranglers the lead for good, as Wichita won for the sixth straight time overall and for the seventh straight time over Springfield.
The loss drops the Cards to 32-26, now three games back of Tulsa in the North Division.
The Cards got on the board in the fourth inning against Wichita starter Kyle Middleton. Rico Washington and Josh Pressley opened the inning with consecutive singles. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, Cody Haerther's groundball drove home the game's first run, scoring Washington from third for a 1-0 lead. Gabe Johnson's two-out single brought Pressley home, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Springfield added two more in the fifth inning, as Reid Gorecki and Juan Richardson got things started with back-to-back one-out singles. Rico Washington drove home his league-leading 52nd RBI with a sac fly to center field, scoring Gorecki for a 3-0 lead. Richardson scored to make it 4-0, as Nick Stavinoha delivered his second of three hits on the night, a two-out single to left field.
Wichita finally tallied in the sixth, against Cards' starter Mike Parisi. Mitch Maier tripled to right field to open the inning, then scored on Billy Butler's RBI single.
Rich Scalamandre relieved Parisi in the seventh, retiring all three men he faced.
Things got rough for Springfield in the eighth though, as Cory Doyne came on and walked three straight batters to load the bases. Mark Worrell (1-4) was brought in and recorded two quick outs without allowing a run. Worrell then issued a walk to Brett Groves, forcing in a run, making it 4-2. Angel Sanchez then delivered a two-run single to left-center, tying the game at 4-4. Matt Tupman then walked, reloading the bases with two outs. Mitch Maier then picked up a clutch, two-run single, giving Wichita a 6-4 lead. Billy Butler followed with a two-run double off reliever Chris Russ, making it 8-4.
Springfield got the first two men on board in the ninth against Wichita reliever Cody Smith (4-0). Mike McCoy singled and Reid Gorecki reached on an error. After Smith struck out Juan Richardson for the first out, Nate Hoelscher was brought out of the Wichita bullpen. Hoelscher earned his third save of the year, retiring both hitters he faced, striking out pinch hitter Iker Franco to end it.
Cards' starter Mike Parisi looked good over six-plus innings, allowing just one run on seven hits in the no-decision.
Springfield wraps up this 11-game road trip in Wichita on Friday night, as they look to end the four-game skid. Rich Rundles (4-4) will go for Springfield, while Wichita throws Seung Jun Song. Game time from Wichita on Friday night is 7:30pm.
The Cardinals return home from their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th.
