Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The Hooks topped Midland 2-1 with a walk-off single Thursday night at Whataburger Field. With the win, the Hooks (34-25) now lead Midland (31-29) by 3.5 games in the Texas League South.
Hooks' starter Chance Douglass had a solid performance, tossing eight innings of one-run ball. Douglass started off the game by retiring the first 17 RockHounds he faced. Douglass was perfect going into the sixth before Brian Snyder reached base. With two down, Snyder hit a sharp grounder to third that went off the glove of Mark Saccomanno for an error. Douglass retired the next batter to get out of the inning without any damage.
Douglass witnessed his no-hit bid come to an end off the bat of Travis Buck. Buck led off the seventh inning with home run to right-center field. Buck's homer put Midland on top 1-0.
Corpus Christi tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With two down and runners on first and third, Jonny Ash popped what seemed to be the third out of the inning to right field. Hounds' right fielder Brian Stavisky moved towards the ball but lost it in the sky. The ball dropped between center fielder Matt Allegra and Stavisky, allowing the Hooks to tie the game at one.
With the game tied at one apiece in the ninth, Jorge Cortes led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Saccomanno then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Cortes to third. Instead of putting Walter Young on base to set up a double play, Midland took its chances to get him out and failed. Young drove a screaming liner up the middle to drive in Cortes for the game winning run.
Douglass worked eight innings, scattering four hits, striking out two and walking one. Paul Estrada worked the ninth inning to pick up the victory for the Hooks. Brad Ziegler suffered the complete-game loss for Midland, which has dropped 11 straight games to Corpus Christi.
The final game of the series with Midland is set for Friday night with RHP Josh Miller (6-5, 3.99) on the mound for the Hooks and RHP David Bradley (3-5, 4.08) on the hill for Midland. It's Friday - and another Bud Light Friday Fireworks' Night at Whataburger Field!
