Cards cruise past Jammers

This evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey, the New Jersey Cardinals downed the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins), 9-2. Chris Bova (1-1) picked up the win in his 1st start of the season for the Cards (15-15), and Jason Vargas (2-1) was tagged with the loss for the Jammers (11-21). The last time the Cards were at or above .500 this late in the season was the final day of the 2002 season when the club finished 39-37.

The Cards jumped out to an early lead 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Mike Ferris singled and later scored on a Tim Cantu ground ball to first base. In the 3rd, the Cards tacked on another run when Casey Grimm singled and came around to score on a Ferris single. Then, in the 4th, the Cards added on 7 more. Grimm had a 2 RBI double and Ferris another RBI double to spark the rally.

Mike Ferris and Casey Grimm led the way offensively for the Cards, each picking up 3 hits, 2 RBI and scoring 2 runs. Wes Swackhamer chipped in with 2 hits and a run scored, and Sean Dobson did the same. Bova pitched 5 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, and 3 hits in picking up the win. Jeremy Zick followed with 3 innings of shut out relief, and Scott Schweitzer pitched a scoreless 9th to finish out the victory.

The Cards continue their five-game home stand tomorrow night at 7:15 pm with game two of their series with Jamestown and then close out the series on Thursday night. On Friday, the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) make their first trip of the season to Skylands Park when the clubs open up a two-game set. Tomorrow night, New Jersey Hand Surgery sponsors a batting glove giveaway, Thursday, Miller Lite and The New Jersey Herald sponsor the second installment of the Miller Lite Bat Bonanza and Friday night is fireworks night courtesy of Condit Toyota and The Star Ledger. Saturday night, Franklin Sussex Auto Mall sponsors a Monster Truck Crush, it is Knights of Columbus night, and post-game is Family Catch on the Field and Girl Scout Sleepover Night.
